From Rock to Reality

Back in the 1980's I was in a rock band that put out a couple of CD's. If we hadn't been so unpopular I think we could have been huge.

Our 1st CD was called, Just in time to be late (the name set the tone for how well we weren't going to do). We were going to call the 2nd CD, Only to be remembered by how quickly they were forgotten but the record company felt this would only hasten the arrival of the CD at it's ultimate and final resting place (the delete/discount bin at records stores).

The music industry measures sales success in terms of Gold and Platinum. They created a new category for us. They called it Sponge. I'm proud to say we achieved Double Sponge status.

Our initial pressing of 10 CD's sold quickly and propelled us to Single Sponge status but it would be many more months until my mom gave away the 1st 10 CD's and bought the next pressing of 10 to give away. Once all of her friends and family had copies of the CD, sales stalled.

It was during this period that I met the woman of my dreams that would one day become my wife. Not long after, my life went From Rock to Reality.

Hey Andy,

Your article "From Rock To Reality" is very timely from my perspective since my basement band Collider is about to release its first CD!

We would very much like to achieve sponge status. Perhaps we could have your Mom market our CD!!

Cheers mate!!

That's so funny. I didn't even know about sponge status until now. Congrates on your accomplishment.

You know, when these things show up in my e-mail, they appear as several dozen pages of html code with the blog entry buried in the middle somewhere. I enjoy reading the two paragraphs of blog, but I don't really want to sift through all the code to find it...thanks!

Reading Rock to Reality, brought back so many memories of that Sponge band that I loved so much in the 80s!! I remember converting plain white tees into "official" Sponge band tees! Ah, the memories!!

I can proudly say that I own the CD's that propelled you to Sponge Band Status, and can honestly say, that I do NOT have to dust them off to play them. I still listen to them regularly, and so, am proud to call myself a Sponge Band Groupie!! lol

Hi Andy

Many people who known a glory in the music industry like a musician or singer in any band or solo lived a little depress when he back on reality after their career. But I have your last cd Common ground.
